Mercy came into her first pregnancy with a clear intention: she wanted to birth naturally, with knowledge, confidence, and support. From early on, she committed herself to learning, diving deep into prenatal and childbirth education with me. We spent time together exploring physiology, comfort techniques, birth plans, and most importantly, how to trust her body. Mercy didn’t just prepare; she embodied readiness.
When labor began, she was surrounded by a powerful circle: her sister, her mother, and both me and Lacrisha (who was joining as part of her doula training). Having two doulas in the room was a gift, and Mercy welcomed us with warmth and openness. Her sister, especially, leaned into the experience, eager to be hands-on and grateful for the guidance we offered. It was a room filled with love, strength, and intention.
Mercy moved through labor with grace. She followed our guidance with trust, changing positions, using breathwork, and trying a variety of techniques to stay grounded and connected. She listened to her body, responded to its cues, and stayed present through each wave.
As transition approached, Mercy chose to use nitrous oxide, a tool we had discussed during her prenatal sessions. It was exactly what she needed. The nitrous helped her stay calm and focused through the intensity of transition and into pushing. She chose to push on her hands and knees, and her baby arrived rapidly and beautifully.
The speed of delivery brought some minor tearing, but Mercy continued to use the nitrous during the repair, breathing through it with the same strength and composure she had shown throughout labor. She was steady, intuitive, and powerful.
Mercy’s birth was a testament to preparation, trust, and the beauty of being surrounded by people who believe in you. She birthed her baby with courage and clarity, and watching her step into motherhood was nothing short of inspiring.
