Courtney’s journey took a sudden and serious turn when she developed severe preeclampsia. What began as a routine pregnancy quickly shifted into something far more intense, and she was admitted to the hospital for close monitoring. For days, she fought with everything she had to keep her baby safe, and together with her care team, she made it all the way to 34 weeks.
But eventually, her body had given all it could. Her providers knew she needed to deliver, and that labor would be too much strain. A cesarean was the safest path forward.
Even in the face of something so unexpected and overwhelming, Courtney and her husband carried themselves with remarkable strength. While we waited to go back to the OR, the mood was surprisingly light—positive, hopeful, steady. They leaned on each other with such grace, choosing courage over fear, choosing trust over worry.
I was able to join them in the OR, and watching Courtney in that space was nothing short of inspiring. She stayed calm, grounded, and incredibly strong. Her husband never left her side, offering quiet reassurance and love in every moment.
And then—her baby arrived. Small but mighty. Strong from the very first breath.
The relief in the room was palpable. After everything her body had endured, after all the uncertainty and intensity, her baby did beautifully. Courtney did beautifully. Their strength carried them through one of the hardest chapters of their lives.
Being there with them—holding space, offering support, witnessing their courage—was an honor. Courtney’s birth wasn’t the path she imagined, but it was a powerful testament to resilience, love, and the fierce determination of a mother protecting her child.
